LION MAN resurrected – 4k Restoration of THE SWORD AND THE CLAW to Blu-ray from AGFA in January

LION MAN resurrected – 4k Restoration of THE SWORD AND THE CLAW to Blu-ray from AGFA in January

For all the persistent talk of how physical media is dying, it’s been a¬†great few years to be a genre video fan – and the more niche, the better. To that end, the American Genre Film Archive are prepping a 4k restoration of one of the least likely films ever to hit the Blu-ray format; director Natuk Baytan’s ridiculous 1975 actioner¬†The Sword and the Claw, otherwise known as¬†Kili√ß Aslan or, as I saw it in an English dub years ago,¬†Lion Man.

The film has hero C√ľneyt Arkin (The Man who Saved the World and pre-eminent Turkish action star) and his indestructible lion claws trampolining to bloody vengeance against the evil usurper who killed his family. A must-see, in other words. The AGFA blu-ray looks to be positively stacked, offering up the film (restored from the only known surviving 35mm element) as well as a bonus action feature (the South Korean kung-fu opus Brawl Busters) and a wealth of trailers. The disc will see release on January 23rd. Full details, quoted from AGFA:

They took his money. They took his family. And now, they’ve taken his hands. But they can never take his revenge!

Exploding from the same hallucinogenic netherworld as the Turkish Star Wars,¬†The Sword and the Claw¬†stars Turkish genre legend C√ľneyt Arkin in his most iconic role. It’s¬†Conan the Barbarian¬†meets¬†The Three Stooges¬†meets¬†Dolemite¬†with more lo-fi bloodshed, pop-art visuals, and bizarro dubbing than the boundaries of reality can handle.

Special Features and Technical Specs:

  • BRAND NEW 4K RESTORATION¬†from the only 35mm theatrical print in existence

  • Face-smashing action trailers from the AGFA vault

  • Bonus Movie:¬†Brawl Busters¬†(1981), a new 2K scan from an original theatrical print

  • Reversible cover art with illustration by Alexis Ziritt (Space Riders)

The American Genre Film Archive has previously released restored discs of The Zodiac Killer and Effects, and recently presented (in cooperation with Something Weird) a 2k restoration of the improbable (and unclaimed) porno spoof Bat Pussy at Fantatic Fest. Pre-orders for The Sword and the Claw are not yet live, but you can keep up with all the AGFA home video happenings at Diabolik DVD.
